Attie Ghana, Ivory CoastHeight is 19 Inches.Old small age cracks on face and torso.Wood.This old and obviously worn figure most likely comes from the area shared by Ghana and the Ivory Coast. It is a region of shared culture and carving styles reflecting elements of the Baule, Attie or any of the smaller so-called Lagoon peoples. The figure is large by their standards and though showing signs of wear through time and use is a solid example of Baule sculpture. Under the patination covering parts of the figure the natural color of the wood emerges indicating it’s age. The figure is also presented as seated which is indicator of status. The elaborate markings on the face and the complexity and detail of the hair enhance the presentation of the figure as someone of rank and social status. The finely balanced carving of the figure and the well-finished surface all reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. Wear around the waist indicates that the figure at one time had belt of beads.
