Overall Condition: Good Damage, Repair: crack along the back and head, crack in the base with piece missing, stain, Additional Information: A wonderful and well carved figure with a nice patina along with pigment and stains from sacrificial offerings. The figure shows carved elaborate coiffure and braided beard. Its body is covered with elaborate keloid scarification. The face is remarkable by its heart- shaped form, scarification, and its serene expression.  Baule figure sculptures fall into several categories. The most common represents spirits of the wild (asie usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries and the "spirit world" spouses which are male and female figures. The monkey figure is also one of the most important sculpture found among the Baule. It is not easy to determine of the function of a piece like this one taken out of the original context. Its form does not tell how the piece was used and for what purpose. Without any precise information at the time of the collect we can just guess. This sculpture may present a spirit husband (Blolo Bian). Its surface appears to have traces of kaolin or sacrifices on it. It could also be used as a nature spirit (Asie Usu) which is kept in personal shrines in houses or in the bush.
