Pierre Dofo is from Cote d'Ivoire and lives in Abidjan where he has built an extensive collection of African Art over the years.  He had sold part of his collection and I was pleased to acquire a few pieces from his collection. Additional Information: A beautiful small Baule standing female figure with arms detached from the body, hands resting on her thighs, body and head decorated with incisions.The surface shows signs of white pigment.  Small figures such as this were probably considered as spirit spouse of the other word. After earthly marriage, one night of the week is kept for sleeping with the spirit spouse, and earthly spouses may not sleep together. The carvings are kept very private, and are rarely seen. "Other world spouses," are kept in personal shrines where offerings are made to them and where they are close to their real world spouse. It is likely certain that this figure was used as a personal spirit of bush, to whom the owner asks blessing and protection. Baule figurative statuary is some of the best known and most collected. Miniatures of this kind are found. They are smaller version of large figures. Lager figures are finely carved male and female figures ranging from 20 to 60 centimeters. They are generally portrayed in a standing position of formal calmness with arms close to the body and hands resting on the abdomen. Attention is focused upon the head with emphasis given to detailed face and neck scarification and elaborate coiffures.
