Description
Baule Standing Female Figure Type of Object: Statue, carvingEthnic Group: Baule see also AnyiCountry of Origin: Cote d'Ivoire, GhanaMaterials: Wood, beads, pigment Approximate Age: Mid 20 th century Dimensions: 18 inches Overall Condition: Good Damage, Repair: big chips at the base Additional Information: This superb standing female figure most probably came from a shrine some where among the Baule of Ivory Coast. Remains of wear indicate long use and substantial age for this wooden figure. Classically carved figures such as this are known generally as waka sran, meaning a 'person of wood'. Some sculptures were owned by diviners known as Komien, who could tell the future, cure illnesses as well as solving local community problems. The figures embody a number of symbolic elements as shrine figures; she is a place of residence for the spirit of the bush ready to be called upon by the diviner. Advised by the bush spirit (asye usu) the diviner will determine the reason that a woman is barren and direct her as to what she must do bear children. It is the energy and power of the bush spirits that create and give life that are contacted by the diviner and directed to the woman. This well carved figure exhibits typical Baule concern with the aesthetics of the presentation of the beauty of the women. Her hair is carefully modeled and scarification on her back, chest, abdomen, and face as well as the carved ring-like around the neck, the carvet armlet show her as a mature and prominent woman of her village. This is an interesting sculpture and will stand out in any good collection.Further reading:P. L.
