Description
1589 Miniature Ortelius World Atlas in Latin - 94 maps THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN THIS SPECIAL ITEM!    ATLAS TITLE:  EPITOME THEATRI ORTELIANI, ANTVERPIAE, PHILIPPO GALLEAO EXCUDEBAT CHRISTOPHORUS PLANTINUS, MDLXXXIX   SUMMARY You are bidding on an original, rare Miniature Ortelius World Atlas printed in 1589 in Latin with 94 maps in fair to good condition!  This item is unique and of considerable value historically, as no pocket atlas of Ortelius, “the father of the atlas,” existed before 1577.  The print on the maps is strong, and the binding is the original vellum.  This atlas is part of a private collection.  I am selling this on behalf of the owner who is a knowledgeable collector.  His decision to release this from his collection is your opportunity to own a piece of history!   DESCRIPTION This excellent, small work has 94 maps with Latin descriptions, all of which have the similar detail to the maps in the original 1570 Theatrum atlas as well as many maps not found in that atlas. In addition to a neat reduction of Ortelius’s first world map and maps of the continents Europe, Asia, Africa and America, the work has maps of China, India, Persia, Russia, modern Ethiopia/horn of Africa and the Arabian peninsula, several covering north Africa, the middle east and the Turkish empire. The many European maps cover it in great detail.   HISTORY The great success of the landmark 1570 Theatrum atlas lead to the publication of a miniature version, the first of which was published in 1577. The miniature Ortelius atlas was a great success, much less expensive than the larger additions and issued up to 1612. A new miniature world map appeared in 1588, replacing the larger one dated 1574, which had been associated with earlier additions of the Epitome. This 1589 atlas is the first Latin miniature edition in which the new oval map appeared. It was taken, much reduced from Ortelius’ current world map in his Theatrum, and was used in the Epitome until 1612.
