Description
Barometer/thermometer, Louis XVI, giltwood, circa 1790-1800, circular painted dial with drapery pendent and a pierced cartouche carved as a dove within a wreath above wheat and farming implements. Gilt over gesso. Some damage to trim and bundle of wheat, otherwise in very good condition. White paper dial inscribed “Barometre Thermometre Selon Reaumur” with weather conditions in French from Pluie (rain) to Tres Sec (dry). Original glass mercury tubing, central temperature scale. and metal workings. Purchased at Sloan’s Auctioneers and Appriasers, catalogue sale, July 19, 2002 (illustrated in catalogue). 7 lbs., 34” high, 19.5” wide, 4” deep (at cartouche) SHIPPING: Buyer responsible for actual shipping costs and WE WILL SHIP ANYWHERE. On Oct-14-08 at 08:55:40 PDT, seller added the following information:REVISION TO SHIPPING: LOCAL PICKUP ONLY OR SHIPPING AT BUYER'S RISK. Unfortunately, we cannot easily remove the thermometer glass tube or drain the mercury. As you can see from the photos, the barometer glass tube is missing, so this is not an issue. We can only ship with the thermometer tube and mercury intact at buyer’s risk. (If the glass breaks, presumably the dial would be stained badly.) We would have it packed in a wooden crate and thoroughly padded, of course, but shipping would be very risky. Thank you for your inquiries. We regret having to make this revision.
