Measuring over 6 feet tall and over 5 feet wide, this important traditional Taoist wood sculpture consists of 27 carved statuettes, ranging in size from 2 inches to over 10 inches in height. There is a polychrome background of caves and crags upon which sit the various gold-lacquered Celestial Deities and Great Masters to the Taoist tradition.Such "Mountains" were at one time found in most Taoist temples and Monasteries in the Fukien area and served as centers of reverence for practitioners. Very few survived the Cultural Revolution and the rampaging Red Guards. And, of the precious few that were hidden and protected from destruction, most have now been dismantled and the individual images sold to foreign collectors and decorators.
