Stripped pine bench, purchased in NYC in 1986 at Evergreen Antiques on Madison Avenue. Swedish is IN again & this is a very beautiful & usefulk piece. Very sturdy, great condition. It is currently stripped wax pine, no evidence that it was ever painted but... The overall shape of this bench is very lovely, very graceful. Condition is very good to excellent. Legs appear to be original, seat too. No loose joints or damage except nicks from being 150 years old. One of the finials has a piece out where a knot in the pine finally dried up & fell out. Doesn't detract from the counrty beauty of this item. When I bought it I was told that it is a "bride's bench"---a young man would make this for his fiancee or new bride, a country custom in Sweden. The heart-shaped line of the back is decorated with a stylized bar like a rolling pin & the front finials(posts) are tulips--all symbols of marital love & joy & well-being. Wonderful piece for an entryway or foyer, also great in bedroom or dining room, counrty kitchen!
