This beautifully hand-chased silver snuff box measures 2 3/4" by 2" and is 3/8" thick. The top and bottom are each decorated with an elaborate urn & foliage pattern framed by 2 bands of dashed lines, as you can see in our first two pix. Though not shown in our pix, the 4 sides of this box are also decorated - with a feather pattern and the two bands of dashed lines across the bottom. Up front, there are three tabs on the bottom half and one on the top half that is off-set to allow for easy opening. Additionally, the top is designed so it stops just after reaching halfway open - to facilitate grasping the snuff without spilling any. Both top and bottom are marked on the inside with a small '12'. Based on the Loth System, which divided silver alloys into 16 parts, this box is 12/16 pure silver, or .750. For nearly 200 years prior to 1886, German and Polish silver carried these two-digit assay marks as part of this system. Based on the size and shape of this piece, and the style of its decoration, our best guess as to age is the 2nd quarter of the 19th century (1825-50), more or less. Condition is superb -- no dents, breaks, bends, cracks, stains, signs of wear or other damage / problems to the exterior. The interior surfaces show some slight patination and a bit of tarnish/oxidation along the hinge; we'll let the new owner decide whether to clean up this area.
