Description
This rug is a rare antique Qasgha'i, made by nomadic tribesman (1870's) from the uplands of Fars province in southern Persia, who traditionally market their wares in the town of Shiraz. The Qasgha'i are a confederation of tribes of different ethnic origins, but the majority are of Turkic stock, which is clearly reflected in the influence in their designs. Their reportorie is among the most varied and visually exciting; drawing, both from Anatolian and Persian designs. The knotting of the better items can be extremely fine (as in this rug) with 200 or more Turkish (or sometimes Persian) knots per square inch and good quality (soft and strong) lambs wool is normally used both for the foundation and the pile. Qasgha'i rugs are often confused with inferior Shiraz rugs- made in and around the town of Shiraz using Qasgha'i designs- and which less scrupulous dealers sometimes call Qasgha'i because they can command twice the price of a Shiraz. Colors: All natural dyes220 Knots per square inch100% wool (pile & foundation)Size: 6' 8" x 4' 9"
