Description
This early 19th century redware plate is a joy to behold. The hand that decorated this plate did so with assurance. Executed with great skill, this plate has survived decades in wonderful condition. This will make a fine addition to any collection with no cracks or hairlines. Note a few minor chips to the edges--to be expected on a piece that was a part of daily household use and not discarded! Provenance extends to Ephrata, Pennsylvania. The Lancaster County town is most noted for The Cloisters, a thriving community of about 80 members, founded by Conrad Beissel. The celibate members were mostly crafts people practicing the arts of calligraphy (fraktur) a capella ( unaccompanied) music composition and singing, and publishing and printing. 10 1/2" dia.
