This Type of work originates from Mamluk Dynasty and goes back over 1000 years. It is usually refered to as Cairo-Ware / Cairo ware / Cairoware , even though its origin is not necessarily Egytian. This type of work is still being done today , especially in Syria and Egypt although these newer works are extremely inferior in quality and workmanship for the most part and a few detailed ones that are made are usually by private order and bare hefty price tags. This piece is from early 20th Century and from estate of a deceased U.S. Admiral who was stationed in Red Sea and Egypt at one point during his active duty years. 4 verses along with multitude of engraved geometrical ground detail, together with Arabasque detail could be seen throughout this piece. It is made of Brass and inlaid with silver and copper. It meaures 18 inches in diameter with raised border detail about 3/4 inches above the main body of the tray. It is in very good to excellent condition with a pleasant patina covering the front and back of the piece. A great addition to Any Islamic / Eastern Art or Metalware collection.
