This beautiful “Russell & Erwin” interior door set was made during the late 1890’s. It consists of 2 brass knobs, 2 brass escutcheons, 1 steel mortise lock with brass faceplate, 1 working key, and 1 spindle with 1 setscrew. All brass parts are solid, heavy, cast brass—not stamped or plated iron. The knobs and plates feature R&E’s Neo-Classical “Olympus” pattern. The pattern has very pronounced Anthemia, flowers, and acanthus. The brass parts of this set were carefully cleaned, leaving the patina within the crevices to promote the raised details. The set has been very well-maintained over the years. There are no breaks, serious cracks, heavy scratches, dents, etc. The only flaws to report are on the back of the knobs. Before being removed from the door, the knobs must have been secured to the spindle with stripped screws, and the only way to remove them was to drill them out. Now, one of the knobs has, in addition to the hole for a screw, another tiny hole in back. This knob also has a thin, non-structurally threatening crack on the back side. The spindle has been permanently secured to one of the knobs. The holes on the shank were filled with solder. However, that is not really a flaw because that is where spindle is supposed to be. The lock was completely disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled. Now, it operates very smoothly. A key was made especially for this set. We could make additional keys for $3/key—let us know after the auction.
