Description
A fabulous find! A pair of native american antique beaded moccasin slippers. The lady who owns these slippers says her grandmother always said these slippers were bought from the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show which came to Manchester England in 1903 and when the show closed down they sold off some of the exhibits. I have no way to verify these claims but judging from the beadwork and crafting of these moccasins I think this is probably true. These fabulous slippers have been well kept and were always a treasured item but now the family have decided to down-size and they are selling some items from their collection. There are no makers marks or labels of any kind in the slippers and as I am no expert I cannot say which tribe they were made by. They are hand made in a soft leather with leather thong ties around the upper section which pull in to the correct size. There are leather tongs which are hand stitched on to the main shoe sections. The soles are solid leather pieces which are hand stitched on to the shoes. The front, sides and lower back of heels are covered with bright beadwork. Mainly a bright rich blue with sections in white, coral, red green and dark blue. Most of the beading is in very good condition but there are a few areas where repair may be needed. The over all look of these is stunning and I am sure they will be a welcome addition to any collection of First Nation American Items. Condition - as you can see from the photos there are some areas of damage. On the left moccasin there is a small hole - less than 2cms long where the shoe joins the sole - the sole has pulled away and the leather at this section is worn quite thin. There is beading missing on this part approx 4cms of the multi coloured beaded pattern. On this shoe at the back of the heel there are about four strands of beading missing approx 2mm long. The rest of the left shoe is in very good condition - the leather is soft and supple and the beading is bright with no beading missing from the front or down the outer side. On the right shoe the stitching on the sole has come away on about 5cms - there 2 strands of beads at the heel missing approx 2mm long and one strand of beads missing approx 1cm long on the side - but no other damage. Over all I would say condition is very good for items of the age. The beadwork is bright and colourfull and the leather is soft and supple. The moccasins could be worn with care and make a fabulous display item. Length from toe to heel is approx 29cms and width across the sole at the widest part is approx 10.5cms - they seem to be a wide fitting and if I had to guess a size I would say approx size 7 in UK mans shoe size.
