Description
This is an amazing historic table that is almost certainly ONE OF A KIND. It was produced by a man by the name of August Hand of Cleveland in about 1890. Mr Hand was a sales rep for Brunswick and a cabinet maker as well. It is believed that he was commissioned to build this table for a famous pioneer in the Ohio region around Cleveland, Elmer Wood Gillmer. Mr Gillmer was the founder of Peerless Electric and the very first electric lights in Warren, Ohio were installed in the Gillmer mansion. This is where this pool table resided for more than 100 years. Research indicates that Mr Gillmer was an avid 3 cushion/carom player and this table was a billiards table when I got it. The table was only played on for a very short time because Mr Gillmer died and the mansion was eventually donated by descendants and the Gillmer House became a well known museum. The pool table was donated to a Cleveland family friend for use in a youth center but because it was a carom table it was never put together and remained with THOSE descendants for the past 50 years. I was very fortunate to aquire this table several months ago and to even have ever seen a table made by August Hand is special. To have one in this pristine condition and have a matching cue rack with it is almost unbelievable. As for the table itself, aside from the great historic significance it holds, it is a 9 foot pocket billiards table that was converted by me to be a regular pool table. The slates are perfect and cut to pockets exactly as they did in 1890. The table has only had ONE felt on it in 120 years. No nail marks whatsoever. The finish is the ORIGINAL finish. No stripping and re-finishing has been done to this table. It is ORIGINAL right down to the bolts and screws. It is made of ash and oak and was not all that special in 1890 when all the fabulous inlaid tables were being produced but in today's market and in consideration of all the other factors that make this table special there is no doubt that you are looking at possibly the only "HAND" table and cue rack in existance. The slate is 3 piece and 1 inch thick. Absolutely perfect. I am offering this table on ebay for a short period and will end the auction early if little interest is shown or if I should sell it in my store. I will gladly deliver this table, hopefullut to the Cleveland area, for a modest fee if the bidding supports the value I believe this table to have. You can't just go out and find another table like this anywhere. Email with questions and if you have any historic information to add to my description I would appreciate. Mr. Hand has a number of descendants still living in the Cleveland area so if you know any of them please alert them to this sale. Thanks for looking and please visit my ebay store for some cool billiards tables, photos, and other items.
