Description
An elegant shaped Attic black-figure lekythos decorated in black slip with added crimson colouring and incisions. The theme of the decoration consists of horses, perhaps a chariot? the vague outline of a figure and a vine meandering above. A band of dots demarcates the shoulder where there are two bands of rays. The vase has no cracks but the surface is eroded through contact with the ground and there are the usual odd glaze chips. Height; 7.75inches.  Possibly Athens, circa 5th.cent. BC. The lekythos is a form of Greek pottery that was used as a personal container for perfumed oils. The Greeks used olive oil for personal hygeine. After a days work or a hard exercise at the gymnasium, a wealthy man, or probably his slave, would open the lekythos pour a layer of oil on the mans skin then scrape it and the sweat off with a curved strigil. This would remove the oil and the sweat, leaving the man clean and ready for social niceties.
