Found in the heart of Amish country near Lancaster (Ephrata), this very early quilt stretcher has nine foot wooden poles that are octagonal in form and the two end "horses" which support the poles have three legs, each that is mortised and glued on the underside (see close-up photos below).The "horses" are approx. 3 feet wide and have slots for adjusting the width of the quilt being worked on.There is remnants of canvas on each pole that is held in place by crude hand forged square nails (see close-up below).This piece speaks history and tradition when the whole community would get together to help one another and the amount of wear on this piece indicates it saw plenty of use by the Pennsylvania Dutch during the 19th century.Typical wear and tear and missing two of the four turned wooden washers on end and overall in fine condition and an extremely rare survivor that is seldom seen even in the finest textile museums in the country and it would look great in a Mennonite / Amish display with a quilt draped over it.
