Description
c.1870-90 Apothecary Jars Two very large druggist/doctor jars measuring 9 1/2" and 11" in height with matching hand blown glass stoppers.Of a nice dark amber color, this pair was fire polished to remove the mold lines after forming and the stoppers still have sharp pontil marks from being broken off the pontil rod (stoppers were also fire polished and ground on sides for a tighter fit into the necks). These are not only large but made of very thick glass and weigh in at a hefty 3 1/4 pounds and 3 1/2 pounds respectively. One example has a difficult to see 3" hairline crack near neck and the other is perfect and neither have any chips in the glass (both glass stoppers are also in fine condition with no chips). These large hand finished apothecary jars in dark amber glass are purported to have been blown in some southern New Jersey glass houses and these surfaced recently in S. Jersey along with some other early blown glass I currently have up at auction. This basic form was still in use up until the 1900's but post 1900 jars have mold lines and weren't fire polished afterwards (to remove mold lines) and don't have sharp pontil marks on the stoppers like these.Very rare in this large size, they would make a nice display item for the collector of Civil War era medical antiques or collector of early American glass.
