Description
This wonderful 19th century box was found near Waynesboro , Virginia and has been in our personal collection for many years. It is made of walnut , dovetailed corners and a pine bottom secured with small handcut square nails.I think the lids may be poplar but are the same color as the body of the box. We have always wondered what it's intended use was. Most cutlery trays do not have lids and show alot of wear on the inside from knives and forks hitting the sides. This box shows some wear inside but not as much as one would expect to see in a cutlery box. We lean towards the sewing box use as the lids are too delicate for heavy kitchen use. No matter the intent , the box with it"s heart cutout handle is a great example of early folk art. The top measures 13 1/8" x 7 1/2" and approximately 8" tall. The condition is wonderful with no repairs or damage. The finish, which may not be original , has a wonderful patina and is just as it was found.
