Description
We’re selling this gorgeous antique children’s toy upright player piano which has been a real star in our collection for almost 25 years. It is a Piano Lodeon by the J. Chein Co. of New Jersey. The piano plays both as a regular piano and as an electrically-run player piano with music rolls. There are 30 keys, 18 white and 12 black, and it has a rather “honky-tonk” sound to it when played. It originally sold in the 1950s for $40.00 with 6 piano rolls included. This Piano Lodeon is in a dark maroon colored plastic with gold colored ‘scrolls’ on each side of the roll area. They were also offered in other colors; we once had a cream-colored one and we’ve seen one in pink. This piano is in truly excellent condition, with just a couple noticeable scratches on the right end and very minor scuffing from very light usage. Also, the silver Piano Lodeon nameplate above the keys has very minor black spots in it that may well have been there from new. The piano measures 20 3/8 inches wide, 20 inches high and 10 inches deep. All told, we doubt that there is a nicer one available anywhere unless it’s new in the box. The back is of plywood which is excellent with the maker’s logo stamped there along with a serial number, but they’re quite light and hard to read. The cord and plug are excellent and the on-off switch and the rewind-stop-play switch function as they should. We have only one music roll with the original box, “I Want a Girl”, but others are available reasonably from eBay sellers. The player piano part is in good working order with a very recognizable rendition of the song. We are also including with the Piano Lodeon a Sept. 21, 1971 copy of Collector’s Weekly which has an article on the front page about a Piano Lodeon being offered for sale at a show for $150.00. They said then that the piano was made about 25 years prior. We will have this piano packed with the utmost care and insurance to make certain it arrives in the same excellent condition it is now.
