Description
This auction is for a vintage Solid Brass Bell, with clapper, and brass mounting bracket. This bell is engraved Kate Grammerstorf, and is in excellent condition, cleaned, and polished. It is 6 1/2" tall, with a bottom diameter of 8", weighs almost 18 pounds. The clapper is handmade, and has a ring on the bottom for attaching a rope.  I has a very nice ringing sound, with great volume. I recently bought this bell at an estate garage sale. They could not tell me any history about it.  I thought the name engraved on it may have been a school teacher, and this bell was a gift to her?  I googled the name Kate Grammerstorf, and found that there was a German Merchant ship with this name back in the 1930's.  If it is from this ship I do not know how it may have came to Northwestern Ohio. I do know that alot of Germans imigrated to this area, even the township is named German. My wife's Grandfather was German, and a sailor on a merchant ship. I have read where sailors from foreign ships would jump ship when they ported in the U.S. maybe this how the bell came here? Maybe someone can find more info about it, if you do please let me know.   Thanks for looking, please contact me if you have any questions.
