Description
ANTIQUE NEW ENGLAND RARE TOLEWARE COAL SCUTTLE. NO RESERVE! This auction is for a toleware coal scuttle, purchased in New England many years ago. I believe it is a local piece, probably made in Connecticut, or Massachusetts. As a coal scuttle, as can be expected, there is a lot of wear and some dents here and there, with a small split on the base (please see photo). The hand painted design consists of a dove carrying a ribbon with a sprig of flowers against a black ground. The interior is a deep orange-red. There is also scrollwork in various areas around the pail. On the top bridge is another painted design of flowers. Although I don't have it's exact age, the hand work and wear suggest at least 100 years old, (likely older). The impressed design of the tin has been decorated as well. The scuttle measures approximately 13" tall and over 16" long. There is no reserve, good luck and much success in your bidding! Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions regarding items for sale, especially if my description isn't adequate enough to make an informed bidding decision, as all sales are final. Unless the description states the item is in "mint" or "new" condition, please assume that it is used and in "as is" condition. I always list flaws, such as cracks, chips, discoloration or missing parts. However, unless there is abnormal wear and tear, I don't always mention normal age-related wear, such as light glaze crazing in ceramics (which occurs as the clay body expands and contracts over time but the glaze doesn't) or light scratches. In spite of careful packaging, an occasional item may arrive broken due to handling in the shipment. To address this embarrassing problem, and so that the cost of the item may be reimbursed (minus shipping and insurance), insurance purchase is a requirement of the sale. If a problem should arise with the receipt of a damaged item, please bring the item to your local post office in its original packaging to complete the appropriate forms for insurance reimbursement. Whenever possible, I will combine shipping to lower the cost. Shipping costs within the USA are via Priority Mail and the cost includes insurance, shipping and handling. Please add $19.50 to the final cost of this item for shipping, handling and insurance. Whenever possible, I will combine shipping to lower the cost. To lower shipping costs to Canada, shipment is via Airmail Parcel Post without insurance. If insurance is needed for shipment to Canada, please contact me prior to the end of auction and I will calculate the costs by the more expensive alternative, which includes insurance. For Canadian shipment minus insurance, Canadian customers, please add $23.00 to the final item cost. As mentioned above, whenever possible, I will combine shipping to lower the cost. Overseas bidders, please email me for postage costs prior to bidding, as this may influence your bidding decision. Please note, only insured items will be reimbursed (minus shipping costs) if lost or damaged in shipment. Thanks for looking!
