Description
This is a pair of Abumi, Samurai Armour Stirrups, made of Iron and Silver, with silver Mons and intricate inlay work in silver. Very impressive and fit for a Shogun or a Daimyo, a Samurai Lord. The pair dates from the Edo Era, probably 18th Century Edo rather than 19th, quite possibly much older. Very old and beautiful, very sculptural and display superbly, a remarkable conversation piece and a wonderful, unique, interesting and inspirational gift for a special person. Both are intact and in excellent antique condition for a very old object, without missing parts, cracks, damage, repairs or alterations. The surface of the iron and of the silver inlay with wear and aging commensurate with the great age, wear including rubbing, tarnishing, iron with surface pitting and rusting particularly inside, however, I would not recommend polishing the silver to a shine or removing rust- this can be attempted with home methods but is not recommended. The surface overall has the patina and feel of great age and the wear adds to the beauty and unique feel of the objects. These would have once had wooden liners. The stirrups are rather beautiful after all this time and with the stated age wear, with a look of mystery - they are wonderful as a centerpiece or mantle pieces, or as coffee table sculptures, remarkable old objects, still singing stories of War and Conquest in Old Japan. These are quite large and quite heavy - the length of each is approximately 12-14". The mon design is, as we were told when we acquired this pair, Tomoye, of the Warlord House of Arina. Very old, beautiful, rare and interesting item - and is guaranteed to please a lover of Japanese art.
