Description
EXCEPTIONAL CARVED ITALIAN VICTORIAN DINING TABLE WITH CARVED EDGE, CLAW 4 PART PEDESTAL AND CARVED TOPCLOSED 5 FT, OPEN W/2 LEAVES 9 FT., 5 FT. WIDE This table talks castle or mansion. It would make an incredible library table. It just has a presence that tells it was owned by someone special and wealthy. One leaf by itself weighs about as much as I can lift. By the quality of the finish and weight of the wood, I'm guessing this table is about as nice as Continental furniture gets. The table could be English but the claw foot carving of the base reminds of a long cellaret we once owned from Italy. At best guess, I'd date the table from 1850-1880.The walnut is very tightly grained and finely finished. They set 4 inch "stilt" blocks under all the legs to raise the table to a height of 33". The owner liked the extra room between the 20” chairs that came with the table and his knees uner the skirt. We have sold the chairs now but without the blocks, which are just placed under the legs for easy removable, the table is a normal 29" high. I sat in one of the chairs when the set was here and there was enough leg room at the shorter height to fit under for me. I've been using the table in my store for displaying some special pieces which looked nice at the extra height, so for the moment blocks are still in place in the photos. The table sticks out a few inches from the apron skirt. I took photos of the blocks under table since it’s so heavy and takes 2 strong helpers to assist me to even budge this heavy table. I will include the blocks in case, you prefer table taller though originally table never had nor needed them. I guess it depends on what chairs you have for it. The skirt measures 7" (the distance from top edge to the bottom of side skirt). The 2 leaves have matching skirt carving so when installed table edge is consistent.Examine photos so not to miss the great detail of this wonderful and unusual table. Condition: Table is as stable and strong as any I have ever seen. It has obviously been well cared for during the years. Finish appears to be original. There are a couple of "character scratches or shrinkage cracks" of small consequence and in no way lowers the value of this important antique.Delivery can be arranged through a mover of your choice but I will do my best to arrange shipping for you if possible. I have a network of dealer friends who help me do long distance delivery and occasionally I can arrange shipping for you.Understandably, the shipping costs will be your responsibility should you decide to purchase this great table.
