Description
Up for auction is ONE of two beautiful FRAMED WOVEN SILK FRENCH TAPESTRIES that I have up for auction this week.  This SILK PICTURE is entitled, "SPRINGTIME" by the famous artist PIERRE-AUGUSTE COT.  I do have another beautiful tapestry by Cot in a separate auction entitled "THE STORM".  Please note, this auction is for one picture/tapestry only.  This tapestry has been handpainted to achieve some color (gold or yellow) on a black, gray and white silk.  It is marked on the back, "HANDPAINTED, MADE IN FRANCE, MASTERPIECE SERIES" and is NUMBERED 111.  It is marked on the bottom front left corner, "NF" referring to Neyret Freres and the bottom front right corner, "D'APRES P.A. COT".  The picture depicts two young lovers sitting on a swing. CONDITION  Silk Fabric very good - no tears, spotting or stains.  It does need stretched a little but not that noticable in my opinion.  Frame is WOODEN FRENCH PROVENCIAL STYLE WHITE AND GOLD.  It is very substantial and very ORNATELY designed.  It does have a few cracks in the wood which are not unusual in very old pieces like these.  They are very tight  though and still displays without notice.  The backing paper is very loose and most of these have been removed on other similar pictures.  I hate to do that because so much info. would be lost. FRAME MEASURES 18 X 12 3/4" ACTUAL SILK PICTURES MEASURES 13 X 7 1/2" "SPRINGTIME" By French artist Pierre-Auguste Cot in 1873.  "SPRINGTIME" is also known as "Le Printemps".  "Springtime" as well as "The Storm" are on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.  "The Storm" belongs to the museum while "Springtime" is privately owned.  ARTIST ~ PIERRE-AUGUSTE COT Cot was born in Bedarieux in the South of France on February 17, 1837 and died in 1883.   He was a very famous french painter and was most notable for his portraits.  He eventually went to Paris where he mainly worked in Leon Cogniet's studio.  He also studied under William Adolphe Boughuereau (of whose work I just love) among others.   SILK WOVEN FRENCH TAPESTRY  SILK TAPESTRY MADE IN FRANCE PRIOR TO 1950.  Many workshops made silk prints in France from the early 1800's up until around WWII in 1945.  This one was done by NEYRET FRERES. Production stopped after the war probably due to the high cost of fine quality Chinese silk.  After 1950 it was very difficult to procure good quality silk from China.  Silks from Japan and others were not near the quaility. Coloring ~ just to get the gray color in a picture took more than 12 different gray silks for just one picture.  The manufacturing cost became far too high. Soldiers would purchase these french silk tapestries in various forms such as pictures, ties, handkerchiefs, etc. as souvenirs during wartime.  Most people don't realize what they actually have.  These are very sought after items. ESTIMATED VALUE IS REPORTED TO BE $80 TO $800. Please....ASK QUESTIONS PRIOR TO BIDDING.  I am not an art expert.  This is information that I have researched on my own from variour sources.  I picked these up at an estate auction and the auctioneer didn't know very much about them.  The person had passed away and there were many many items from around the world in this auction.  These silks are very beautiful.  I seem to always buy things I have a difficult time parting with.  You will enjoy this one, I assure you.  Take a look. I know that your options are many and I consider it an honor that you chose to stop by. Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help you in your selections.
