These very rare and most beautiful 19th century early lighting three piece Girandole Suite. This 3 piece set of mantel garniture or girandole, consists of a three branch center piece with an edwardian Colonial Victorian figural man and woman. Romeo and Juliet. I have seen catalogs with the center piece signed by the famous lighting firm of Cornelius & Co of Philadelphia and patent dated (1843-1848). I have looked allover on these three pieces for a signature but alas have not found it. This breathtaking suite in magnificent and guarenteed to be the originals not a reproduction. This rare girandole suite can be found in the book Nineteenth Century Lighting - Candle-powered Devices: 1783-1883 by H. Parrott Bacot. There are numerous photographs of this same girandole along with a detailed description except the flanking singles are of a Military Office and a Lady. At this time, researchers are hampered by there being no known surviving copy of catalogs from the Cornelius firm dating earlier than circa 1876. What the company called some models at earlier times is unknown.  A similar three-branch model is shown as plate 111 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1970 exhibit catalogue. The gold finish has never been restored and everything is in original condition. The basically cylindrical candle cups with palmette bordered square bobeches and the prism rings composed of a floral band with lovebirds all typify the best of Cornelius firm work.  The gold over brass shows wear but this set is just stunning. All of the marble bases measure 1" thick and do hve some flea bites on edges. Plus this set has all of the cut glass original prisms with impressed flower/stars.
