Description
This is a very impressive long hardwood staff / stick / paddle of some sort with a very ornate carved top. I am unsure exactly what it is but I think it originates in the South Seas , probably from Fiji. It has been in my wifes family along with an ULA which I have also listed since the turn of the century when it was brought home by a relative who travelled the world as a ships architect. This piece is 170cm tall. The ornate carving at the top measures 16cm. The narrow top slowly gets wider along the length of the piece until the base , which measures 6cm across. At the bottom it has slightly rounded edges and is flat. It actually resembles an oar. The carving at the top has 2 kind of circles which look a little like eyes. The pattern is repeated on both sides. On one eye on both sides there appears to be mother of pearl detailing. Please note that on one side there is a little remnants of old cream paint [ photo 5 ]. This is where we decorated many years ago and forgot that the paint was still wet when hanging the piece back up. It should be easily removed. The piece is in excellent condition with no damage or splits. It will be tricky to wrap but I have a good track record so do not worry. please feel free to take a look at the other related item - the Ula. If you have any questions regarding international postage or anything else, please feel free to e mail.On 04-Oct-08 at 19:58:55 BST, seller added the following information:I have now been told that this item is from New Zealand and is called a Taiaha. It was apparantly used by Maori chiefs. Thankyou for those that sent this information.
