AlexSh Store ...:: Uzbek Antique ::... ANTIQUE 1900 UZBEK SILK IKAT PANEL KURPA FROM BUKHARA Designing fabrics is a remarkable phenomenon of popular art in Uzbekistan. The art of designing fabrics reflects the periods of its complex century-old history, and gives a memorable description of the creative work of thousand talented masters of art. Uzbek textiles have not only historical and functional significance but also great artistic value. The most interesting was the decoration of Abr silk and half-silk fabrics and very rare the decoration of paper fabrics. The method of Abrbandi (ikat) consisted of reservation of separate parts of the base by means of the web with the following dying according to the pattern and colours of the material. This method created a striking artistic effect, creating patterns with blurred outlines. The design of Abr fabrics showed a peculiar broad pattern of rainbow coloured lancets. The most attractive thing in Uzbek fabrics is the beauty of their colour and the pure dyes which are applied in delicate combinations. The colouring is driven to the utmost stress, either resorting to sharp constrasts or delicate harmony. Bukhara ikat or Abr silk is a miracle of decorative art in Uzbekistan. The art of designing fabrics in Bukhara has a style of its own, and its the best specimens came into being where the great masters found patterns which were logic in composition and masterly performed. The traditional Bukhara ikat is a monumental style with brightly coloured large-scale designed patterns. LOT NAME traditional Silk Ikat PANEL Kurpa-cover ORIGIN THE EMIRATE OF BUKHARA from the Sogdian "lucky place" has been one of the main centres of Turkic civilization during its history. It has been inhabited for at least five millennia and the city itself has existed for half that time. Located on the Silk Road, the city has long been a center of trade, scholarship, culture, and religion. AGE APPROXIMATELY 1900 YEAR MATERIALS The fabric of this panel "Kanoviz" has been patterned with the ikat technique, an urban men's skill in Central Asia, in which pattern is produced by binding the warp threads tightly according to the desired pattern and dyeing them before attaching the warp to the loom for weaving the cloth. The fabric is thus woven after the pattern has been dyed into the warp. Natural silk, lining interlacing. Lined with Russian cotton. CONDITION good antique, some wears, needs some cleaning SIZE 47-65 in. (120-166 cm) We're honored to be able to offer you the antique brilliantly coloured silk ikat Panel, was made in Bukhara, Uzbekistan in about 1900 year. Silk 100%, sett knitting, ornamented abrbandi-knit warp, hand spinning. This gentle and strong in the same time unique silk fabric named Kanaus-shoyi or shokhi (imperial). Such luxury Ikat was produces only in Bukhara city. Shokhi-silk was produced in Marghelan, Ferghana valley too, but Kanaus-Shokhi was more strong, more dense and more colorful and saturated. Exspressive contrast color, compatibility and harmony of colors, color intensity were always appreciated in Central Asia even more than beautiful expressive pattern. So colorful silks from Bukhara were always highly valued and were favourite. This silk fabric was expensive and used for clothes of nobility. It is mainly patterned with the large red circles, which represent "Mokh", the Moon, are decorated with paler shapes and in the middle of each is a large yellow centre. In between the flowers is a purple zig-zag design representing cypress trees and spirals-symbols of the Universe. The Moon depiction is connected with the goddess Anahita cult, the goddness of Central Asia rivers and fertility. In 500 BC Bukhara functioned as a cult center for the worship of Anahita, and her associated temple economy. Approximately once a lunar cycle, the inhabitants of the Zeravshan Fan exchanged their old idols of the goddess for new ones. The trade festival took place in front of the Mokh Temple. This festival was important in assuring the fertility of land on which all inhabitants of the delta depended. In the 19th century this motif passes through the history of the art, gradually losing its religious significance. In our days it appears in the form of a tulip named yak lola. The panel is lined with cotton and bordered with embroidered black cotton frame. It is rather in good condition, but it needs some cleaning.
