Description
rhusrluk rhusrluk Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.little A fine London delft punch bowl typically painted in dark blue with peonies, a fence and bamboo; the edge with an unusual wavy design; the underside undecorated; most likely Lambeth High Street, Thomas Morgan and Abigail Griffith, circa 1780. This is a quietly imposing and very pretty delft punch bowl, especially on account of the scalloped edge. It would make a perfect and very distinctive display piece for a period chest, or an attractive dining table bowl for fruit, eggs, etc.. The decoration is typically Lambeth, probably made at the High Street factory of Thomas Morgan and Abigail Griffith. The Chinese-derived cloud scrolls around the inside of the rim can be seen on many Lambeth products of the 1780 period (see, for instance, Michael Archer, Delftware ... [1997], Cat. Nos. B177 and B186-7 for similarly decorated Lambeth plates). The unusual, and very attractive feature here is the scalloped edge of the bowl which is not so common on English delftware. The bowl is nicely potted and covered all over in a light blue tinged white glaze. The painting on the inside of the bowl - of a typical large peony, hedge and bamboo - is directly copied from Chinese export porcelain. The bowl measures approximately 9 inches in diameter and is about 2 1/4 inches in height. The bowl is in good condition overall but the rim has areas where minor chips had occurred owing to the soft pottery body. Approximately eight (of 24) lobes of the scalloped rim have been restored. The restoration is nicely done so that appearance is now excellent and ready for display or use (take a look at the detailed photographs below). Recent falls in the stock markets may begin to persuade buyers that antiques represent good value for money in the long term. There is the added academic interest of forming a collection and the fact that antiques, unlike stocks and shares, can give the buyer a lifetime of visual pleasure.
