Description
rhusrluk rhusrluk Antiques in good taste – harmic.little A very rare English black glass case molded cylinder wine bottle with an attractive seal marked 'Trelaske'; circa 1820 – 1830. This is an attractive sealed bottle in absolutely perfect condition and not one I have encountered before. The name 'Trelaske' on the seal is almost certainly a phonetic mis-spelling of the Cornish name 'Treliske'. Treliske is a small village very close to, and on a hill above, Truro, the capital of the Duchy of Cornwall in far southwest England. Treliske was historically "a long straggling village in the center of the old tin mining district (of Cornwall) and sits on a steep hill running down to the river Tamar". It is now a rather undistinguished suburban ribbon development of houses largely undifferentiated from the nearby city of Truro. The bottle is a fully evolved cylinder of sophisticated form with a wedge-shaped rim section with a string-rim immediately underneath it (see photos below). The bottle is case molded and quite thick and heavy with a flat edge to the base with a moderate kick-up. A sand pontil appears to have been used in the blowing process. The bottle is 11 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches in diameter at the shoulder. It is in excellent condition and bright and clean. As good as the day it left the glassmaker's factory. The owner of the house was Samuel Archer. The pub in the village is called the Archers Arms.
