Description
shaneybrook.com 8' 11" x 11' 7" Antique Aubusson Oriental Inspired "Cabbage Rose" pattern Sanford Beauvais Axminister (Karastan weave) Rug Carpet (Circa 1918-1928). Click any picture for an enlargement. Dating from the period between 1918 and 1928, this offering is 100% wool American woven spool axminister rug. The rug is comprised in the traditional higher quality fashion woven in two strips (to be sown together by hand). The stips can also be used as runners or area rugs. One of the two prominent weaves of the era (the other being the wilton), the axminister was an evolution of generations of hand woven art which began in this weave in England. The first carpet mill established in the United States (around the same time), at Philadelphia in 1791, by William Peter Sprague which undertook the production of Axminister on looms painstakingly moved from England. Many other mills would develop their own versions of the axminister looms across the eastern seaboard and eventually into the mid-west. The development of the power loom axminister allowed speedier production at lowered costs that brought the American Axminister into quantity production and a position of leadership within the market.   This unusual period example has a surprisingly thick and luxurious full and consistent pile. The colours are exceptionally rich and vivid without any fading or tinting of any kind. The rug is free of odors - animal or otherwise. The ends are finished with the traditional folded-over salvage which is sown by hand on the rear of the rug. For the novice buyer, the feel is similar to a modern Karastan, only the pile from this period is slightly shorter. This rug has been professional hand cleaned by our own conservation team with a restorative thorough washing adhering to the National Institute of Textiles and A.I.C. (American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works) guidelines. The protein and lanolin based soap conditions the natural fibres in the rug and returns the original lustrous character and richness of colour to the wool. No steam extraction methods, commercial "shampoo" methods or chemical detergents were used during the cleaning process. Every step possible has been taken to preserve the historic nature and conserve the rug's condition. We do not use any optical enhancers of any kind (natural or chemical). Optical enhancers and chemical detergents damage and pull dye to the surface of the rug's fibres, slowly stripping colour and character from the wool as the rug continues to age. Beware of descriptions claiming use of such materials and harsh cleaning methods that "brighten, add a sheen, or antique wash" the rugs -- all of these methods deteriorate and damage these wonderful vintage and antique pieces beyond repair.
