shaneybrook.com 4' 6" x 7' 3" Antique Chinese Art Deco Bird of Paradise pattern Masland Carmile Wilton Vintage Rug Carpet. Click any picture for an enlargement. This rug is an original, period Masland wilton rug made in their best quality weave -- the Carmile. The colour palette helps to identify the period of the rug as woven between 1924 and 1938. It measures 248 knots (ends of worsted wool cords) per square inch - the highest quality weave Masland produced. The following is a description written of the Bird of Paradise pattern: "The pattern was taken from a set of Chinese screens which the Emperor of China gave to the Metropolitan Museum of New York in the earliest part of the 20th century. In many ways, these equal the beautiful porcelains and emboideries of the Chinese middle ages. They show also the modern influence of the finer work of their neighbors, the Japanese. These screens give a rather exalted impression of the modern school of Chinese art. They are not, however, at all typical of China as they lack the traditional, ill-proportioned absurdities which to some look quaint and fantastic and to others grotesque and crude. This rug is artistically beyond the Chinese rug weavers. The fine details of design and colours could not be expressed in the coarse, loose fabrics of their looms". This offering is one of the more rare and unusual colour palette variations in which this rug was produced. The rug has an exceptional "like new" full and consistent pile without any low, worn or traffic areas. The colours are earth toned and appear without fading, shading or tinting of any kind.The original fringe was missing -- it has been replaced with a genuine cotton wilton fringe woven exclusively at Shaneybrook's own mill. This rug has not yet been cleaned. We do, however, offer this service if the buyer so chooses. Our professional hand cleaning is conducted in-house by our own conservation team with a restorative thorough washing adhering to the National Institute of Textiles and A.I.C. (American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works) guidelines. The protein and lanolin based soap conditions the natural fibres in the rug and returns the original lustrous character and richness of colour to the wool. No steam extraction methods, commercial "shampoo" methods or chemical detergents were used during the cleaning process. Every step possible is been taken to preserve the historic nature and conserve the rug's condition. We do not use any optical enhancers of any kind (natural or chemical). Optical enhancers and chemical detergents damage and pull dye to the surface of the rug's fibres, slowly stripping colour and character from the wool as the rug continues to age. Beware of descriptions claiming use of such materials and harsh cleaning methods that "brighten, add a sheen, or antique wash" the rugs -- all of these methods deteriorate and damage these wonderful vintage and antique pieces beyond repair.
