The earliest recorded history of Michigan dates back to 17 May 1673. It was on this historic day that Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette, fur trader Louis Jolliet and five other adventurers left the newly established mission at St. Ignace to explore a great river the Indians called the Mississippi. The French had already begun exploring the great lakes in 1620. Marquette's party traveled along the northern shore of Lake Michigan, entered Green Bay and crossed present-day Wisconsin. They paddled enthusiastically down the great river, but a few weeks later ended up a disappointed lot when they realize that great river did not provide that long-sought northwestern passageway to China. The exploration of the lakes continued as did that of the land that we now know as the state of Michigan. Over a century and a half later, on 26 January 1837, President Andrew Jackson signed a historic bill making Michigan the nation's twenty-sixth state. The enactment ended a struggle that had began over two years earlier when twenty-three-year-old acting Territorial Governor Stevens T. Mason declared that Michigan had a "right" to be a state, despite Congress's refusal to endorse a state constitutional convention. Even as Congress was wondering how to settle the dispute between Michigan and Ohio over the control of the 500-square-mile stretch of land called the Toledo Strip, citizens of Michigan wrote a state constitution with several farsighted features, including a comprehensive public education system under a state superintendent. You can examine historic landmarks in each of the 37 cities showcased here, walk down the wide and well-planned streets, enjoy the enchanting waterfront view, see the steamers as they make their smoky way down various waterways, visit factories or watch the smoke-belching locomotives huff and puff their way across the countryside with their load of passengers or goods. Each map is a hand-drawn treasure that does not miss even on the minutest detail. Arial views and grid maps included here make for a worthwhile study of Michigan’s history and of the economic, technological and industrial advancements the state had made by the latter part of the 19th century. Some of the cities featured on this CD are Albion, Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Detroit, Grand Haven, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. EDITORIAL REVIEW: This is a great CD. While the title may suggested that it is designed for historians, cartographers and collectors of antique maps, it actually provides a fabulous study for anybody interested in great art. Above everything else, the maps you see on this CD are exquisite examples of art from the late 19th century. Nobody, not even the most casual browser can deny the fact that the intricate detail woven into each of the 45 maps included here is mind-boggling. Just how these artists managed to cram all this information into a single drawing beats me and that is something I have given up trying to figure out. What amazed me most about these maps is the faultless aerial perspective they offer. While you gaze in wonder at the fabulous artistic offering, you cannot help being overawed by the painstakingly neat and orderly planning of each city. The town planners surely deserve loads of praise for such meticulous town planning, which if anything, is futuristic. The details provided by the Mr. SID Viewer are really astounding - you can zoom in on the smallest detail on any of the maps. It’s like flying over the city in a helicopter with powerful binoculars and zooming in on a block and then a street and a building. This CD is a treasure trove of Michigan’s history and is a must have for all those who hail from this great state, who are history buffs and those who claim to be lovers of art.
