Description
Current Lot IMPORTANT AMERICAN CARVED GILTWOOD EAGLE STERNBOARD. Second half 19th century. Carved in a displayed attack position, gripping a cluster of arrows in one talon, an olive branch in the other; the mouth, tongue, and eye in crimson red paint; all carved on a blue plank ground. Above the eagle is a carved sunburst. Literature: Shipcarvers of North America by M. V. Brewington. See fig. 83, p. 86, for a similar illustration of a stern eagle design by Edbury Hatch. SIZE: 107" l x 42-1/2" h. PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, Maine. CONDITION: Old surfaces with old re-paint, traces of original gilding show through. The eagle structurally intact with exception of a repair to proper right leg. Multiple seam splits on backboard at bottom, dry rot evident in board by talon with arrows and beneath proper right wing. Area of sunburst with splits. A one-inch loss to single feather tip in tail. The overall quality and impressive stature of this piece warrants the cost of restoration. 9-92540 (20,000-30,000)
