The porthole swings out when the lower wingnuts are loosened and disengaged.  Has three predrilled holes for easy wall mounting. Recalls the sailing ships and navy vessels of yesteryear. Another nice use for this mirror is covering something on a wall, like a wall safe as the mirror swings open ( 17 1/4 in dia. opening ) Would made a wonderful addition to any marine collection, or gift for the nautical enthusiast. Easy to change from mirror to clear glass, add a picture behind glass, or paint a picture behind the porthole and have no glass or mirror. The portholes we sell are decorative only, not for use outside to protect from a storm.  Many customers mount one on each side of door or wall.  Some use these for outside walls but you have to decide on gaskets, and sealing methods as we make no guarantees and no gaskets are included or available from us. This brass porthole mirror measures approximately 20 inches in diameter and 3 1/4 inches deep at wing nuts.
