Description
At first we thought these were Currier & Ives prints from the mid 19th century but then we read the identical captions at the bottom of each print and except for the date underneath the captions, both are the same: GODEY"S AMERICANIZED PARIS FASHIONS. Beneath one caption is the date, 1851, while 1845 is beneath the other print's caption. The prints measure 7-5/8" by 9-5/8" while the frames they're in which appear to be well-preserved maple with a fine gold rule centered on all four sides of the frames, measure 8-7/8" by 11". The paper upon which each is printed is a deeper manila color and the colors of the clothes both women in both prints are wearing are still vibrant. The 1851 print shows two women standing in their parlor with their small dogs in front of them. there's a long blue drape near the right edge and various accessories on the mantel of the fireplace in front of which they're standing. Both are wearing bonnets and long flaring, floor-length dresses which are bell-shaped. One has  a draped style while the other has  layers which flow out from underneath the one above. the woman wearing that dress also is wearing a lovely shaw unlike any I've ever seen before. Both prints then have a pastel green 1/2" wide frame with thin black rulles both inside and outside the green.<p><p>The 1845 print depicts 2 other women with one wearing a bonnet and the other with an extremely curled harido. The lady with the bonnet has it on in a way that shows a bit of her hairdo. They are out on the portico with the woman on the left side seated and the other behind her, standing and both admiring what appears to be an oil painting still in progress for there's a paint palette with brush on a shelf alongside the canvas still sitting upon an easel. Pillars in the background have flowering vines growing upon them with hazey trees in the far background.  The dressed they're wearing ane not too disimilar from those in the print from 6 years later but different enough and examplify how the fashions evolved over the period of years. There's no mistaking the Victorian influence as well as their desire to maintain a level of sophistication by wearing the latest American imports from paris. Even though both prints were sealed on the back, they were apparently sealed many years ago and could really be resealed in the future. There are eyelets screwed into the back of the frames with thin wires attached so they're ready to hang as soon as they arrive. Both are glass panes protecting the front and the frames are in excellent condition. So if you're a fan of antique fashions and fashion prints from the mid 19th century, here are two lovely prints showing the latest American fashions of the era direct from Paris. Please email us with any questions you may have and thanks so much for taking a look at this lovely pair of prints.
