Needle lace is one of very few laces made commercially by hand and is built up one stitch at a time.  Buttonhole is the most important stitch, used  over cord to give a very precise, raised edge.  Various stitches are used to fill in.  Lke all lace-making, it is very time-consuming and requires great care and accuracy.
