Description
This auction is for a Fantastic Antique Continental / French / Victorian Needlework Embroidery Tapestry . Two Men , one smoking a pipe, other standing in attention with hands crossed, a Woman holding on to her infant , in fromt of a house or Parlour , together with a dog on the forefront, a vase on the side of the stairs, barrels and broom, all encased in an allegorical style border with cupids , flowers, and other animals. Three types of Needlework has been employed in making this tapestry, Needlepoint at about 10 knots per linier inch ( 100 KPSI), Pettite-point on the vase, dog and human figures and other details at 20 knots per linear inch ( or 400 KPSI) and face detail done in a blinding fine stitch , 40 knots per linear inch ( or 1600 KPSI). Both silk and wool has been employed in the embroidery. Circa 1875-1900 or earlier. 52 inches wide overall , 58 inches in overall height. The tapestry is bordered with a multicolor rope detail and backed in linen backing. It is in excellent condition but it has not been cleaned while in my possession. I can arrange for it to be cleaned by a textile conservator that I have access to for an additional fee, or you could take care of the cleaning yourself. Insured UPS Shipping ( lower 48 states ).
