Description
1963 Santa Monica Map and Economic Survey Proposed Islands and Freeway in Santa Monica Bay! Created by Mc Connell's Economic Surveys, Cormac E. Mc Connell, C.E., owner.   There is only one...and this is IT.  Actually approved by the Santa Monica City Council in 1964, this plan called for the building of two huge islands in the Santa Monica Bay.  A 1,500 room hotel and convention center were to be constructed on the islands.  As shown on the map, a proposed freeway would have jutted into the Bay from Topanga Canyon Blvd., gone around the outside of the islands and then rejoined the mainland at Olympic Blvd.  Santa Monica citizens formed a group called Save the Santa Monica Bay to successfully protest this plan.  Dimensions: 28 x 21 in. Material: Original Master on Vellum The original newspaper article is included with this auction. Elements of Survey: Map of Proposed Islands and Freeway from Topanga Canyon Blvd. to Marina del Rey and from the the Islands to "20th Century City". 1963 Analysis Chart - Showing Income, Population, Purchasing Power and Number of Families in 6 local areas. "Shore Areas Comparison Chart of Tax Rates" for: Santa Monica Venice Redondo Malibu Manhattan Long Beach Seal Beach Newport Beach There seemed to be some secrecy attached to the planning process as noted by Cormac Mc Connell's admonishment: "Note: Plans and Full treatment presentation to the City of Santa Monica fully tape recorded by Mc Connell.  Not to be taken out of the office or loaned under any circumstances". About Cormac Mc Connell (1894-1979) - Born in Ireland in 1894, Cormac studied to be an economist and a civil engineer.  Over a 45 year career starting in 1926, he provided clients with economic surveys and consulted with them regarding shopping center development.  His focus was mostly on real estate hot spots such as:  Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Hollywood Blvd., Santa Monica, Westwood, Newport Beach, Anaheim, Pasadena, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara and many areas in Northern California.  During the 1930's he was hired to create appraisals for orange and lemon grove owners that included maps and grove production analysis.  He also used his talents to create tourist maps of Hollywood (1930) and Palm Springs.  He was also the first to print maps to the stars homes in the 1920's.  Oil painting was his hobby and large canvases of the Grand Canyon are part of his legacy.   I have acquired the body of his work and will be offering these unique maps and surveys on Ebay over the next several months.  Copyright is held by the seller.  1935 & 1955 Newspaper Clippings on Cormac Mc Connell Paypal is accepted on this auction.  Sales tax is added to California shipping addresses only.  Please ask any questions.  100% satisfaction guarantee:  You may return the map(s) for any reason...see details below. There may be a blueprint copy from this master available in a seperate auction.  Please see my other auctions or email for more information.
