Published for the first time in 1959 by Büchergilde Gutenberg, Zurich, it is a highly illuminating account of this ethnic group who seems to prefer to spend its entire life travelling from one location to the next rather than being confined to one place by manacles like a house or a flat. It is presented in a collaboration of the well-reputed photographer Otto Daettwyler and Kalderash-member and writer Matéo Maximoff. On altogether 135 pages this exceptional monograph in large quarto format(8½" x 11") shows on basically full-page black-and-white pictures in heliogravure scenes from the way Daettwyler had the privilege to witness them live their life while on the road in Spain. The text (written in German) that accompanies and explains the pictures also stems from a person who knows what he is talking about: the writer Matéo Maximoff, himself member of the Kalderash clan, had gained fame as the first Roma writer in France, especially with the publication of his novel "Les Ursitory", which was also translated into German later on. From the preface to this fascinating book written by Karl Rinderknecht, himself member of the "Gypsy Truck Society", we learn that this is a sensational, pioneering work in its field: according to him, no compilation like this has ever been published before. Even if photographs cannot lie anyway, knowing that a man like Maximoff, who has also written a history of his people, provides the text makes everything depicted in the book just a little more valuable as well as credible to the outsider. In his own cultural circles Maximoff is regarded a legend and enjoys high appreciation for giving the Roma a cultural memory. All-in-all this is an extraordinary photo book that radically straightens the widespread, mostly negative prejudice so strongly fixed in society for centuries. It constitutes a treasure of inestimable value on the bookshelf of every humanist with the slightest respect for the "exotic" otherness the gypsies have for centuries reserved the right to live, always deviating and clashing with the general population. We are proud to be able to present rarities like this in an adequate manner also to our English-speaking clients, trying to point out how precious and inimitable especially the illustrations of the books are. With this one being highly desired you should not miss your chance of acquiring it! Another one may not cross your ways for a long time.
