18TH CENTURY ANTIQUE FRENCH TOILE DE JOUY HANGING c1790 Start Price GBP 145.00 Current Price GBP 145.00 Time Left - Bid Count 0 Buy It Now Price - Reserve Price - Start Time Friday, July 18, 2008 End Time Friday, July 25, 2008 Location South Yorkshire See more about '18TH CENTURY ANTIQUE FRENCH TOILE DE JOUY HANGING c1790' Description couscous Store 18TH CENTURY FRENCH TOILE DE JOUY BED HANGING c. 1790 This stunning Antique French Toile de Jouy bed hanging  comes from a chateau in the Loire valley. It is a fabulous panel of a rare Toile de Jouy in an equally rare puce colour and dates from around 1790.  The vignettes show bucolic scenes of a wine harvest involving the whole family, from the old man sitting watching, to girls carrying baskets of grapes and naked children frolicking at their feet. The vignettes are created within a framework of grapes and leaves.  There are other designs showing peaches and corn so, while the main focus is the vendange, the whole represents a plenteous harvest. Extraordinarily there is what appears to be a smoking volcano in the background – the artists at Jouy had vivid imaginations! The panel is in wonderful condition with no fading and only some minor discolouration in two places.  The bottom edge is scalloped and hemmed with toning trim and the lining is partially striped and partially plain pure linen – most unusual.  It is completely hand stitched. The fabric is strong and the colours vibrant.  This really is a fabulous example of a 200 year old toile and very rare to find in such wonderful condition. The panel was originally a bed hanging/valance and measures 76 ¾ ins wide and 34 ins deep.This is a rare panel and would enhance an antique textile collection or would be wonderful used as a decorative element in a chateau-chic home.Payment by Paypal for bidders outside the UK is required.Payment, or arrangements for payment, required within three days of end of auction. Please note – I prefer not to end listings early.If insurance is required it will be additional to the quoted shippng fees as will other options such as signed for delivery.  _gsrx_vers_235 (GS 5.0.2 (235)) Place a Bid!
