Description
1884 SETH THOMAS BRASS SHIP BOTTOM BELL NAUTICAL CLOCKThis is a ca. 1884 Seth Thomas Ship's Bell clock as described in Tran Duy Ly Seth Thomas Book Volume 2 page 756.  This clock is also referred to as an outside bell or bottom bell clock.  Height is 10 1/2 inches and the outer diameter of the bezel is 7 inches and it is about 3 1/2 inches deep.  The Movement strikes the ship's bells and the sequence can easily be advanced by simply depressing the lever on the left side of the dial. The ship bells can be silenced by not winding the left arbor. There is some wear on the dial as can be seen in the photos. There is a regulator speed adjustment lever in the slot above the "12".                                                                                                                                                                                             Overall, this is an outstanding example of an original Seth Thomas Ship's Bell clock dating to 1884. The clock runs and chimes the ships hours loud and clear. The case has a beautiful aged patina, however if you prefer, you can polish the case to look like a similar clock I sold a couple of months ago, item number 140240990675.  It chimes the ship's bell code on the hour and half-hour.  The clock strikes the ship's bell through a double strike system  (see photos) marking off the series of four hour watches that make up the sailor's day. Each four hour watch is divided into half hour periods tolled from one through eight bells. If the chiming gets out of sequence, the clock has a lever on the left side of the dial that makes it very easy to coordinate the chime sequence with the time with out moving the hands. By lifting the lever the ship bell sequence increases by one bell.  The clock runs for approx. one & one-half days  For best accuracy it should be wound daily. The clock comes with a proper fitting key.The clock will be double boxed for added shipping protection and will be sent via USPS Priority Mail in a Large Flat Rate Box which means you should receive it in 2 to 3  business days after your payment clears. Local pickup is available. Please let me know if you have any questions.  Additional high resolution photos are available upon request. The clock is currently running fine, however, seller implies no guarantee of running condition after shipping, since antique clocks may require minor adjustments following shipment.
