Description
Port de Hakodadi 62 x 43 cm copperplate engraving, 70 x 51 cm sheet size, Dépôt-général de la Marine, Paris, engraved 1860, printed 1872 We are pleased to offer this scarce original chart of the harbour and coast of Hakodate, Japan on the island of Hokkaido - a French edition of the chart compiled by five United States ships in a survey ordered in 1854 by Commodore Matthew Perry under the conditions of the Treaty of Kanagawa.  As Hakodate became one of the three principal ports fully open to foreign trade in 1859 the French government saw the need to publish this reissue of the Perry chart for their mariners in 1860.  This example was printed in August 1872 with some "essential corrections" but remains a close copy of the original Perry survey.  Featuring dozens of depth soundings and two detailed coastal profiles, this historically important chart is also quite beautiful with superb engraving work and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. To get a sense of chart detail, consider that the distance from the "Temple" near the town centre west to "Pointe Blanche" as seen in the enlarged photo below measures just 6 cm actual size: Coastal Profile: Title cartouche credits Commodore Perry's surveyors: View of Hakodate "Peak": Condition - Please note carefully:  Chart is in overall very good condition as can be ascertained from photos, some minor soiling to margins but image area near pristine.  The yellow mark near centre was added to designate the location of a lighthouse shown on the chart and is not a stain.  In all a well preserved example of a scarce and decorative chart that will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed.  Inquiries welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions on eBay.
