With an Essay and Instructions by M.D. Wyatt, Arch. London: Day and Son, Lithographers to the Queen, 1860. Quarto, 12-1/4 inches high by 8-3/4 inches wide. Hardcover, bound in brown cloth elaborately decorated in gilt & maroon on the covers and in gilt on the spine. All edges are gilt. The covers are rubbed and soiled and the spine is faded. Though rebacked with the original spine, the cloth is splitting along the lower edge of the front joint and there is a small piece chipped from the tail of the spine. 104 pages of text printed within decorative borders in red or black and with a chromolithographic half-title and an elaborately decorated chromolithographic title page. Illustrated with 99 full-page plates, mostly chromolithographs, depicting examples of the art of illumination throughout the centuries. Tissue guards are interleaved throughout. The hinges are cracked and a few signatures (i.e. group of pages) are lightly pulled. A large hole to the front blank appears to be the result of oxidized ink from an early ink signature. Good.
