Description
Rare and important 1856, Roll / Wall Map of the United States United States by S. Augustus Mitchell. This important American Map measures approx. 60” x 60” (plus its original wood rollers) and is fully titled "Mitchells' New National Map Exhibiting the United States with North American British Provinces, Sandwich Islands, Mexico and Central America, Together with Cuba and the other West India Islands". Published by S. Augustus Mitchell. Philadelphia, (1856). Constructed an engraved by W. Williams, Offered here is the first edition of a highly important map of the United States. As with all of Mitchell's maps of the United States introduced after about 1850, it shows the entire nation, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. It thus incorporates all of the territory acquired after the Mexican War, and is one of the finest large-scale maps for the American West of the period. Wheat called it an "achievement," and devotes a full page to its western half (vol. 4, p. 49.) The map shows the Gadsden Purchase (1854) and the newly surveyed boundary between Mexico and the United States (1855). There is new data in Utah and western Colorado derived from Stansbury's 1852 map. The course of the Rio Grande in far west Texas and New Mexico has been corrected according to the boundary survey. Newly created Kansas, Nebraska and Washington Territory are shown. The map is also adorned with insets, including; a "Map of the World on Mercator's Projection," a "Map of the World on the Globular Projection," and a "Map of the Sandwich Islands," in addition to highly informative statistical tables. Rumsey 2292; Wheat, Trans-Mississippi West, 896. This important American Wall map is in very good condition - complete and. The hand colored, linen backed Wall Map is attached to its original wood mounting bars on top and bottom edges. The Map exhibits some chipping, discoloration to the varnish surface and some weakness near pole attachments. There is overall darkening to the varnish surface but no water staining, darkening, paper loss or significant tears. This rare and important map is NOT in significantly tattered or torn but is intact and is the perfect candidate for a professional cleaning and surface refurbishing (we will be happy to pass along to the winning bidder the name of a firm here in Massachusetts and one in Atlanta Georgia that do fantastic work restoring Wall Maps of this kind). A very rare and important American Roll / Wall Map prominently featuring the American West during the period of rapid Territorial expansion and a fantastic addition to any collection!!! Overseasshippping is extra and cost will be quoted at bidders request. Massachusetts residents must add 5% sales tax. Insurance is required on all items selling for $100 or more and optional on items selling for under $100 (but highly recommended) and not available on International Shipping. Click Here to See Our Items We Have for Sale in the eBay Gallery Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the eBay "Detailed Seller Rating" Star System: The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program. , ATTENTION FRIENDS!!!
