Description
Very rare and very important, 1852 American Atlas by Augustus Mitchell fully titled "A New Universal Atlas Containing Maps of the various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics of the World. With a special map of each of the United States, Plans of Cities &c." - otherwise known as "Mitchell's Universal Atlas". Published by Augustus Mitchell. Philadelphia, 1852. Offered here is a wonderful Edition of this very important American Hand Colored Atlas. The atlas measures approx. 14 1/4" x 17 3/4" and contains 73 hand colored sheets "forming a series of One Hundred and Twenty Two Maps, Plans and Sections.". The atlas includes an engraved title page with large vignette, letterpress table of contents, hand-colored frontispiece of the heights of the principal mountains and lengths of the principal rivers, 73 hand-colored lithographed maps, charts and city plans. It is bound in its' original publisher's 1/2 leather (red morocco) and marbled paper-covered boards with morocco title label elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt on front cover. Despite its title, the Atlas concentrates to a marked degree on the American continent with 34 maps of the area, including a fine, double page map of the United States. All Maps are beautifully hand colored and blank backed (printed on one side only). S. Augustus Mitchell and his sons were the leading publishers of maps in the United States during most of the nineteenth century. Mitchell had come to Philadelphia around 1830 with the intention of improving the standard of geography textbooks, Philadelphia then being the leading city in America for cartographical publications. A New American Atlas, published in 1831, was his first work. In 1845 he acquired the rights to Tanner's New Universal Atlas (first published in 1836), and in 1846 he published his first edition of the present work. Mitchell continued to publish the Atlas until 1850, when he sold the copyright to Cowperthwait & Co. of Philadelphia. This rare and important American Atlas is in very good condition. The binding and covers are tight, intact and very attractive with wear at the extremities and an area of chipping to the leather label on the front board. The title of the Atlas and catalog numbers are neatly printed in white Library paint but there are no internal indications of any kind that the Volume is ex-Library. The interior plates are complete and tight with bright and vibrant original coloring. There is some light age toning to the margins of the plates but overall the Maps are clean, crisp and without foxing, soiling, staining, tears, repairs or damage of any kind. Simply a very rare and important 1852 Mitchell's Universal Atlas with outstanding, hand colored Maps of the United States and the World and a fantastic addition to any Library or Collection!! This very rare and important American Atlas it is offered here, as always, with no reserve and the confidence that it will attract the serious attention that it justly deserves!! Good Luck!! Overseasshippping is extra and cost will be quoted at bidders request. Massachusetts residents must add 5% sales tax. Click Here to See Our Items We Have for Sale in the eBay Gallery Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the eBay "Detailed Seller Rating" Star System: The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program. , ATTENTION FRIENDS!!!
