It was founded in England in 1826 to provide improving information at affordable prices for people who might not otherwise have received education. By far its most successful publication was its world atlas, first fully published in 1834 (individual maps had appeared earlier) and to go through several updated editions until the Society folded in 1846 and the maps passed into the hands of Edward Stanford. This map shows parts of the states of Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennesse, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas. The map has clear, detailed engraving, showing the counties, native territories, major cities, towns and villages, and the topography is finely illustrated. The map measures 15.5" by 12.5",  has original hand colouring and is in good condition with some areas of light yellowing and the upper margin (with the title) is cropped and uneven.  The map is guaranteed to be over 170 years old.
