Burton     Original Antique Engraved Map Map Title: Charte zu Capt. Parry’s Zweyter Entdeckungsreise im nördlichen Polarmeere in den Jahren 1821, 1822, 1823. Printed: Weimar, 1824 An original map of north polar seas showing Captain Parry’s routes in search of the Northwest Passage, during his second voyage from 1821 to 1823. On this voyage, via Davis Strait and Hudson Strait, Captain Parry reached and named the Fury and Hecla Strait, the narrow channel in Nunavut between Baffin Island and Melville Peninsula. This is an original engraved map.  Some fading, otherwise in Very Good condition, and retaining a strong impression. Sheet measures approximately 9.75 inches x 13.5 inches (25 cm x 34.5 cm). Sir William Edward Parry (1790–1855) was a British Arctic explorer and rear admiral. He entered the navy at 13 and made his first voyage to the Arctic under Sir John Ross in 1818 in search of the Northwest Passage. He was then put in command of the Hecla and the Griper in a new expedition from 1819–20 to again search for the passage. Parry sailed westward through Lancaster Sound and discovered and named Melville Island and others of the Queen Elizabeth Islands, as well as naming Barrow Strait. This expedition was a success, having accomplished more than half the journey from Greenland to Bering Strait, the completion of which solved the ancient problem of a Northwest Passage. A narrative of the expedition, entitled ‘Journal of a Voyage to discover a North-west Passage’, appeared in 1821. In May 1821 Parry, now a Commander, set sail with the HMS Fury and HMS Hecla on a second expedition to discover a Northwest Passage, but returned to England in October 1823 without achieving his principle purpose. Nonetheless in discovering the entrance to the passage and a direction to the north magnetic pole, Parry had also found important whaling grounds. His ‘Journal of a Second Voyage, &c’., appeared in 1824. This is an original map from a multi-volume scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy.   Powered by eBay Turbo ListerThe free listing tool.
