Burton Remarkable Map of the Ancient World – Flat Earth Map Title: Primitive Geography of the Greeks, according to Homer & Hesiod. Voyage of the Argonauts and of Ulysses. This map reveals the fascinating perspective of a flat earth according to ancient beliefs, depicting a world of only three continents, with the edges of the earth and its external ocean around the circumference, as well as the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar where Hercules was believed to have performed twelve labors, and where two adjacent promontories were subsequently named the ‘Pillars of Hercules’. The cartographer further illustrates sea routes of Odysseus or Ulysses, legendary Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey, and similar routes sailed by the Argonauts, a band of heroes in Greek mythology. Two lower frames show the systems of Eratosthenes and Strabo. Published: London: Sherwood, Neely & Jones, 1820. This is an original antique map engraved by Cooper del. et. Sculp, printed in 1820. Sheet measures 11 inches x 8.25 inches (28 cm x 21 cm). With vivid color and strong impression, this map is in very good condition, suitable for framing. Until the late sixth century BCE, the Greeks conceptualized the world as a series of concentric circles. Greece was surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea (with large islands like Sicily, Italy, and Cyprus); the Mediterranean was surrounded by the three continents, and behind the continents was the Ocean, which surrounded the world disk. The edges of the continents, according to the myths of the ancient Greeks and Romans, were inhabited by savage, monstrous barbarians and creatures, the opposites of the civilized Greeks in the middle of the earth. Homer was an ancient Greek epic poet, according to ancient Greeks a historical individual, but according to some modern scholars more likely to be a legend. The Homeric Question is a long-standing debate over the authorship of the Iliad and the Odyssey and their historicity, and on the human or factual existence of Homer himself. Hesiod, also an early Greek poet and rhapsode, and Homer are generally considered the earliest Greek poets whose work has survived since at least Herodotus's time, and they are often paired. Scholars disagree about who lived first. Hesiod's writings serve as a major source on Greek mythology, farming techniques, archaic Greek astronomy and ancient time-keeping. Eratosthenes of Cyrene was the first person to calculate the circumference of the Earth and the tilt of the earth's axis (both with remarkable accuracy). He also created a map of the world based on the available geographical knowledge of the era.
