The poem is The Hermit (also sometimes called "Edwin and Angelina") by Oliver Goldsmith, who lived from 1730-1774:             Alas the joys that fortune brings             Are trifling and decay             And those who prize the paltry things              More trifling still than they              And what is friendship but a name              A charm that lulls to sleep              A shade that followeth wealth or fame              But leaves the wretch to weep       The piece is mounted on white cloth in an old gold wood frame. Has a wire for hanging.The sampler appears to be about 15 3/8" x 12 3/8" in the frame. The frame is about 17 1/4" x 14 1/2".The sampler is in antique condition and very fragile. The design is remarkably intact. Colors show some muting. The bottom of the sampler has frayed and there are some small holes on the left side. There is no glass in the frame and there appears to be some staining on the left side. Overall, lovely and very special. The frame has a few chips and the paint is peeling in spots.A piece of textile and stitchery history. Offered with No Reserve.Check out my other items!
